Help Your Neighbors!

We are all busy during the holidays, but this is also one of our busiest fire seasons.  With so much need in this region, we continue to offer disaster prevention education to minimize the number of disasters and save lives.  There is actually an easy way for you to contribute to this effort without taking much time away from your busy holiday schedule.  By committing just a few minutes of your time to reach out to people at local Christmas tree lots this year, you could help decrease the number of fires this holiday season.  If you can visit local establishments in your neighborhood to offer free safety information to customers, you not only help increase disaster prevention awareness, but you also help build the Red Cross’ relationship with your community.

If you are able to spare a half hour during November or December (less if you combine your outreach with your own tree shopping),  please contact Rebecca for a stack of safety flyers at chestnuttr@redcross-philly.org or (215) 299-4039.  These flyers will be shipped directly to your address for you to give to tree vendors at your earliest convenience.

  DISASTER SAFETY STATISTICS

Each year fires associated with the holiday season injure 1,200 individuals and cause over $25 million in damage.  An estimated 6,400 fires occurred during an average New Year’s holiday alone, causing 30 deaths, 93 injuries, and $53 million in property loss.  – U.S. Fire Administration
